Marcus Aurelius & Julian the Apostate — A Conversation Between Philosopher Emperors.
Two Roman emperors. Two philosophers. A conversation that could never have taken place.
This design reproduces an 18th-century engraving depicting an imagined meeting between Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, the Stoic philosopher-emperor, and Julian the Apostate, the Roman emperor who attempted to revive the traditions of classical paganism.
Marcus Aurelius is remembered as one of antiquity's great Stoic thinkers and the author of Meditations. Julian, ruling nearly two centuries later, admired Marcus Aurelius and sought to embody the ideals of the philosopher-ruler in his own reign.
The imagined dialogue belongs to the long European tradition of Dialogues of the Dead—historical figures meeting beyond the limits of their own time to debate philosophy, virtue, leadership, and the human condition.
For those drawn to Stoicism, Roman history, classical philosophy, and the intellectual world of antiquity, this is a conversation worth wearing.
